Chihuahuenses Bus: Northern Mexico and Copper Canyon Routes

Chihuahuenses and Omnibus de Mexico are the bus lines for the far north of Mexico — Chihuahua state, the Copper Canyon region and the routes connecting the northern border cities. If you are heading to Copper Canyon, Creel, Batopilas or anywhere in the Sierra Tarahumara, these are the buses.

Chihuahuenses is part of the Estrella Blanca family. Their coaches range from basic second-class on mountain routes to comfortable first-class on the main highways.

Routes

Main routes run between Chihuahua city and the border — Ciudad Juarez (4-5 hours), Nuevo Casas Grandes (5 hours, for Paquime ruins), and Cuauhtemoc (2 hours, Mennonite country). They also run south to Hidalgo del Parral.

For Copper Canyon, you take the bus to Creel (4 hours from Chihuahua on a mountain road) or catch the Chepe train from Los Mochis or Chihuahua. The bus to Creel is cheaper but the train ride through the canyons is one of the great railway journeys in the Americas.

What to Expect

On the main highways the buses are standard first-class — nothing fancy but comfortable. On mountain routes to places like Batopilas or Creel, expect older buses on rough roads. The Chihuahua to Creel route climbs into the Sierra Madre through pine forests. Scenic but slow.
