Where to Stay in Oaxaca: Hotels and Hostels Near the Zocalo

Oaxaca has accommodation at every budget level, from 200-peso dorm beds to restored colonial mansions charging 5,000 pesos a night. The best area to stay is the historic center — close to the Zocalo, Santo Domingo, the markets and the restaurant scene. Anything within a 10-minute walk of the Zocalo puts you in the middle of things.

Budget

Hostels cluster on the streets around the Zocalo and along Alcala. Beds run 200-400 pesos in a shared dorm. Most have rooftop terraces, communal kitchens and decent WiFi. The hostel scene in Oaxaca is social — expect a mix of backpackers, digital nomads and language students.

Budget hotels in the 500-800 peso range are plentiful. Look on the side streets a few blocks from the Zocalo. Rooms are basic but clean — a bed, a bathroom, maybe a TV. Some include breakfast.

Mid-Range

The sweet spot for Oaxaca is 1,000-2,500 pesos per night. At this range you get courtyard hotels in colonial buildings, proper beds, and often breakfast included. Many are family-run and the service tends to be more personal than chain hotels.

Splurge

Oaxaca has some genuinely beautiful high-end hotels in restored colonial properties. Thick stone walls, courtyards with fountains, rooftop restaurants overlooking Santo Domingo. These run 3,000-8,000 pesos per night depending on season. The premium is worth it for the architecture alone.

Practical Notes

Book ahead for Day of the Dead (late October/early November) and Guelaguetza (late July). These events fill the city. The rest of the year you can usually find a room on arrival.

ATMs are easy to find — several on Alcala and around the Zocalo. Most accept international cards. Keep some cash for taxis, colectivos, and market purchases. Credit cards are accepted at restaurants and shops in the center but not at markets or street stalls.
