ecotourism on its coastal regions to
create sustainable tourism.
Not far from Zicatela, lagoon boat
tours and kayaking offer a look t the
wildlife
Six miles west of Puerto Escondido at
the  
Manialtepec Lagoon (Laguna
de Manialtepec) you can
rent
kayaks
and take boat tours into the
mangroves to observe animals and
birds including spoonbills, storks,
pelicans and cranes and a variety of
migratory birds that feed among the
mangroves.

Playa Principal is home to Puerto
Escondido's fishing fleet.  You can
book a sport fishing charter on the
main street near Play Principal
  • Dining
Many seafood restaurant front the
beach at Playa Principal or you can
buy fillets from the ladies that clean
the fish each day.  The fishing fleet
starts coming in to unload the catch
about 7:00 AM.
The wives and families of the
fishermen will fillet a fish to order and
serve it fresh in a take home bag or
they will cook it for you on a charcoal
grille

How to reach Puerto Escondido if you choose not to go by van
  • Air
Flights reach Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca City Airport (OAX)  and Mexico
City
  • Bus
First class buses leave Oaxaca's first class ADO terminal on a bus route for
Huatulco, Pochutla, and Puerto Escondido, 10 hours.
Second class buses leave Oaxaca City's
second class terminal for
Pochutla and Puerto Escondido.  
Eight Hours
  • Coastal Buses and Taxis
In Puerto Escondido and Pochutla there are local buses and Collectivos
(camionetta) that make runs along the coast road and connect to Puerto
Escondido, Mazunte, Puerto Angel, and Zipolite beaches.
OCC Buses and Estrella Blanca Buses (Futura Bus) run bus routes between
Puerto Escondido , Pochutla, and Huatulco.

Puerto Escondido has a PADI dive shop at
the center of Play Principal as you face the
ocean.  They will provide all equipment,
lessons, local info and boat trips. Cove
beach dive spots for scuba and snorkel are
Playa (beach) Carrizalillo,  and Puerto
Angelito
  • Puerto Escondido Surfing
Playa Zicatela is Puerto Escondido's
surfing beach with an annual November
international competition.  This beach is
open to the ocean and can have 20 foot
waves, not recommended for swimming.
Tandem skydiving during the November
competitions add to the excitement.

The protected beaches in Puerto
Escondido are Playa Marinero and
Playa Principal,  in the center of the
village.  Others are Playa (beach)
Carrizalillo in Puerto Angelito, and
Playa Carrizalillo in protected coves a
little north west of the village center

Modern Vans with AC leave Oaxaca City every
hour on the half hour for the six hour trip to Puerto
Escondido

Van service starts at 4:30 am and runs every hour
on the half hour until 8:30 pm
Last trip at 11 pm.

The van fare for the six-hour trip to Puerto
Escondido is 160 Pesos
  • Terminal
The terminal in Oaxaca City is located on
Avenida Hidalgo,  Five blocks west of the
northwest corner of the Zocalo.

center.
  • Vans
These are relatively new, air conditioned, 15-
passenger  vans with reclining seats.

Note.  The van route is via Sola de Vega, over the
steep southern mountains.  Some passengers
experience motion sickness because of the
winding switchbacks.  Several medications are
recommended by travelers. Check with the
Mexican
farmacias for the over the counter
medication for motion sickness.
 
Van Service reaches the Puerto Escondido beaches in
six hours from Oaxaca City. Van from Oaxaca City to
Puerto Escondido for fishing charter, surf board
rental, scuba diving, ecotours, kayaking, turtle
museum, and nightlife.
