Take a  gallery hop along Rhode Island Sound and hunt the
many antique shops for the treasures of bone and stone
brought back by the Sea Captains of the China Trade.

If you start at the Gilded Age mansions of Newport RI, you
pass through wine country and the elegant mansions
(summer homes) of the industrialist.
Joshua Slocum, the first ever to sail solo around the world,
ended his three year voyage of circumnavigation in the
harbor of Newport
Head north along Rhode Island Sound for the whaling town
of New Bedford, the town where Slocum started his
voyage.  Following the Coastal Villages Trail along Rhode
Island Sound.  The  road will take you through tiny
settlements where the sea captains of the 1840s had built
their Mansard-roofed mansions and salt box retreats.
These old buildings have become antique shops, art
galleries, farm stands, wine tasting vineyards, and historic
museum homes along the Coastal Villages Trail,
Coastal Villages Trail's Little Compton Commons is a New England village
square  forgotten by time. The juncture of three old country roads retains the flavor of
the old New England seacoast whaling villages and farming communities that lived to
fish, to farm, and to pray on Sunday; the common’s white clapboard church, the
tallest building in town, looms over the center of the green surrounded by old
gravestones wreathed in a patina of lichen beneath shading maples.

The Coastal villages Trail leads from the commons to  the west branch of the
Westport River and then north where it parallels the river to Adamsville.

This area, according to legend, was the, "Valley of Sin" because rum runners once
rowed up the estuary in the dark of night to deliver illegal whisky near the gristmill.
Lamplights line the street where two general stores, the
Barn Restaurant, and
several gift shops surround the plaque to the crowing rights for Adamsville, the region’
s development of the Rhode Island Red, a variety of rooster world renown
commemorated with a bronze plaque in front of the baseball park.
Further on the Coastal villages Trail, the Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery conducts tours of the
processing rooms and a tasting gathered around their herb garden.
The rolling hills bathed in coastal mist from Rhode Island Sound have a climate akin to that of northern France
and produce some fine still and sparkling white wines.

Nearby in the fishing port of
Westport Point  you can see antique houses like the house of Stephen Davis,
1770, once a designer of ship hulls, John Head, 1776, builder of colonial homes, and Gideon Davis an 1827
Captain of a whaling square rigger.
The preserved homes of the 19th Century seafarers line the narrow main street terminating at the docks from
where the whalers once sailed the world and now lobstermen and gill-netters coax a living from the sea.
Nearby find the

Allen “Pappy” Manley and wife
Nancy run the Alderbrook farm,
a family operation since 1898.
The eastern terminus of the Coastal Villages Trail leads to Padanaram, home since
1938 of the famous
Concordia sailing yawls and a place of worship for small
boat sailors.
Back in 1898, an event largely overlooked occurred near here when retired China
Trade Sea Captain Joshua Slocum returned after a three-year solo
circumnavigation of the globe in his 37-foot oyster sloop, Spray, the first ever solo
voyage around the world.
He wrote  an ingenuous no-frills adventure yarn in vigorous prose sure to please.

To the west,
Fall River attracts travelers with its factory outlets and the
steel-hulled warships at the floating
Museum of Battleship Cove. There you can
tour the Battleship Massachusetts, the Submarine Lionfish, the Destroyer J P
Kennedy, two PT boats, and a Russian guided-missile cruiser . Nearby, outlet malls
occupy old mill buildings.

The New England Sea Captains could have never imagined such ships of steel on
their Coastal Village Trail,
Along the coastal roads in the mid 1800s
lived Sea Captains like  Joshua Slocum,
a Captain of the China Trade. When he
retired he sailed alone around the world
in a thirty seven foot sloop, the first ever
to do so.

He started in Fairhaven near the whaling
village of New Bedford by rebuilding a
derelict sloop.
We can still get the flavor of the times by
visiting  the seaports and fishing villages
where the Sea Captains lived and
worked along the Coastal Villages Trail.
