The Pacific Coast of Oaxaca State has many
beaches open to large waves. Zicatela is one
of the notable beaches with well developed
infrastructure, hotels, discos, tours,
transportation and restaurants.
The area is also noted for ecotourism with
tours through its coastal lagoons that create
sustainable tourism.

plantations in the mountains nearby

How to Reach Zicatela Beach
Buses
OCC Buses, a division of ADO, leave Oaxaca's first class ADO terminal bound for Huatulco.
Pochutla and Puerto Escondido.
Buses leave the second class terminal in Oaxaca City for Pochutla and Puerto Escondido.
Collectivos (camionetta) in Pochutla make runs to Mazunte, Puerto Angel, and Zipolite
beaches.
Collective taxis and local buses make frequent runs between Pochutla and Puerto Escondido
The Local buses run along the coast road and connect all the coastal towns and villages.
From Pochutla to Puerto Escondido the cost is 20 peso for local bus or collective taxi.
Air Service reaches Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca City, Mexico City. Air service reaches
Huatulco where OCC buses and local buses connect to Pochutla and Puerto Escondido.
Vans run from Oaxaca City for a 6-hour trip to the coast.
Six miles west of Puerto Escondido at the Manialtepec Lagoon
(Laguna de Manialtepec) you can rent kayaks and take boat
tours into the mangroves to observe animals and birds
including spoonbills, storks, pelicans and cranes and a variety
of migratory birds that feed among the mangroves.

Puerto Escondido Surfing
Playa Zicatela is Puerto Escondido's surfing beach with an annual November
international competition. This beach is open to the ocean and can have 20 foot
waves, not recommended for swimming. Tandem skydiving, bikini contests,
skateboard competitions, and other events during the November competitions add
to the excitement.

The protected beaches in Puerto Escondido are Playa Marinero(Principal) in the center of the village,
Playa Marinero, and Playa (beach) Carrizalillo, a cove beach a little north west of the village center (1/2
mile) Free parking on the hill above the beaches

International Championship matches are held on Zicatela
Beach, known for its tube waves as the Mexican Pipeline

The international competition bring excitement to the small fishing village
made famous by its tube waves.
Tourist come to Puerto Escondido where some beaches are open to the
ocean and can have dangerous waves. Zicatela Beach is not recommended
for swimming as the sign above indicates.
Puerto Escondido has other protected beaches for swimming, the most
popular is to the right of Zicatela as you face the water (north) Playa
Marinero. Beginning surfers can practice at playa Marinero, a short walk
from Zicatela, where the cove is sheltered from the open ocean.
Puerto Escondido Playa Principal
The safer swimming beach is located in the
center of the village, Playa Principal, to the
left as you face the ocean where the fishing
fleet is moored.
