Camping in White Sands National Monument is available through the park Service office at the entrance. White Sands National Monument offers tent only camping within the dunes. The sites are primitive.
The photography options at Whites Sands NM are many. The dunes change color as the sun changes.
To reach White Sands National Monument by Air:
Albuquerque New Mexico Airport (ABQ) where rental cars are available.
White Sands is 209 miles south of Albuquerque on Route I-25 South and then Routes 380 East and 54 West to Almogordo. Continue south and west on US Route 70 past the Air Force base and watch for the park entrance on your right, White Sands National Monument.
Tent camping is available in the park and also at nearby Oliver Lee State Park.
North of Albuquerque visit Taos and Santa Fe or the mountains of Sandia Peak, pictured above, reached by cable lift, hiking, or the service road for the ski area.
Walk in to the camping area at White Sands National Monument on the mile or so trail through the dunes.
White sand offers an other-worldly sensation with its total white world. White Sands NM will challenge ones senses. The best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon as the low sun changes color over the dunes.
Just north of Albuquerque the Sandia mountains offer hiking and a ride to the peak on the tram or the vehicle road to the ski area via the access road.
