Travel Photography: Making Marketable Photos While
Traveling Light
Travel  light but still make  travel photos that you can sell
to travel magazines, (sell the rights to Use the Photo) place
with stock houses, or use to make presentation prints or
digital presentations.  This can be a challenge.  No matter
if it is touring Coastal Mexico and the Yucatan, hiking the
Grand Canyon, or squeezing into a slot canyon, traveling
with a minimum of camera gear and making marketable
photos can test your skills.

Over Expose
One characteristic of digital cameras covered in this book
is the nature of the capture system.  You can recover
detail in a slightly over exposed section of a frame in
computer imaging software but you will be less successful
in correcting an underexposure.   When using a digital
camera, therefore, you should just slightly over expose
rather than underexpose.

Camera Preview Window
One great tool that the digital camera offers is the preview
screen. The intensity of this screen is adjustable, however,
and it bears mentioning that if you set it too bright, you
might be fooled onto thinking your exposures are on the
mark when in fact, they will be underexposed. Set your
preview intensity to medium at the most.

Photos That Sell
This book goes into detail concerning elements that make
up a marketable photo.   Not all photos will do well in the
markets regardless of technical excellence

Sense of Place
One of the keys of a marketable travel photo is sense of
place. While making photos in the great backgrounds and
places that attract tourists, you can create a sense of that
place in your photos and return with coverage for a photo
feature or for a full-length feature travel article.  You can
do this by  creating a sense of the place, a feeling that
people can go there and enjoy the surroundings just as
you did.

When covering museums and restaurants, shopping,
sports, and beaches, you will encounter a host of technical
challenges of mixed light and uneven exposure and you will
need a good working knowledge of all the tools described
in the book including
fill flash, GND,  manual camera,
and how to achieve sharpness without a tripod.
If you master these tools, you will be free to travel lightly
with a minimum of equipment while at the same time
making photos that tell the story about the place at a
glance.  Your photos  will give the viewer a sense of the
place and a reason to go there.

Great Tips illustrated with Great Pics, October 20, 2010    ( Amazon
Review)

I found this book to be engaging and full of great tips and instructions. The
black and white travel photos inside are a joy to look at. I would like to see
another book of his with just the photos, printed larger and on glossy stock.

The book is divided into two sections: How to take good travel pictures, and
then, How to sell them. ....

This is the sort of handbook that you will want to buy, read and then save to
refer back to again and again.
