Tonina is an ancient Mayan city noted for the height of its buildings above the main plaza.
Temples of the nobility and priests once lined the top of the Acropolis
Tonina was settled in 300 AD and was at its height as a calendar and
ritual center from 300 AD to 900 AD. Tonina peaked in 900 AD and
then was abandoned.

Tonina Ruin Site Chiapas State, Mexico can be reached by
collective taxi from the market place in the town of Ocosingo. Taxi
from the ADO terminal to the market and collectivo to the Tonina
Site from there. White vans run to the ruin about every 15 minutes.
Cost 20 Pesos from the market.
Yaxchilan Ruin Site and Bonampak can be reached by collective taxi to the Frontera, the border between
Mexico and Guatemala on the Usumacinta River. Two agencies run white vans each hour starting at four am
for the 90 mile, 2,5 hour trip. Cost 70-100 pesos each way. They are located a short walk west of the rotary at
the Cabeza Maya, the large sculptured head at the entrance to the town near the ADO Bus station.

Transportation to Tonina Ruin Site
Tonina ruin is 8 miles east of the center of the town of Ocosingo, just off the highway
between Palenque and San Cristobal de las Casas
ADO Bus reaches the town of Ocosingo where there is a small terminal
Reach Tonina by taxi from the bus station to the market and then collectivo from the
Ocosingo Market to the ruin site.
Or take an 80 peso taxi from the ADO bus terminal to the ruin site.
