The Roman Ruin near St. Remy,  Provence in the South of France called Glanum lies astride the road
through the mountains,  twelve miles south of Avignon.  A mile below Glanum you will find the town of
Saint Remy.

The Roman city of Glanum had first been a Celtic-Ligurian settlement, around 600 BC, and eventually
became a Hellenistic town with Greek style buildings.  The Romans began to colonize Provence in the
2nd century BC and defeated the local Celtic inhabitants  in the first century BC.

The Romans then rebuilt the city,  making it one of the most important  cities in Provence, second
perhaps to nearby Arles.
