  • Chateauneuf du Pape
Chateauneuf du Pape is about 16 km north of Avignon on
the east side of the Rhone River, north of Avignon and
south of Orange.  
  • History
The French Popes headquartered in Avignon rather than
live in Rome from 1309 to 1378 and they built summer
residences with vineyards in Chateauneuf du Pape.
  • Roman Wine Region
According to some histories of the region, the Rhone
River valley was one of the earliest wine regions of
France.  The Romans used the area for wine production
and used the river to ship wine and grains south to the
seaports as they established provincial centers in Arles,
Avignon, St Remy, Orange, and Nimes.
  • Syrah
Côte Rôtie was one of the earliest Cote du Rhone wines.  
This blend of red and white wine of the Northern Rhone
was exported by the Romans who found the indigenous
people using the Syrah grape, a red variety indigenous to
the region, when they arrived in 300 BC.
The Voignier, a white grape, is an ancient import to the
region.
