Many hiking trails run through the hills of Eygalieres
and the Les Alpilles Regional Park, (Parc Naturel
Régional des Alpilles) most notably, the Trail GR 6,
which comes north toward Eygalieres from
Eyguieres and Salon de Provence. If you leave the
trail and head northeast to the D-24B road and the
center of Eygalieres, the hilltop ruin will make a nice
hike.
The remains of a 12 th Century church and later
château occupy the hilltop above Eygalieres Village
and can be seen from many miles distant.
For the hikers who come on the trails through the
olive groves and vineyards or for the bikers who
come from Mouries, Saint Remy, and Les Baux,
the hilltop is a welcome sight; the village center of
Eygalieres offers coffee or a glass of wine and lunch
at the sidewalk cafés along with camping and
hotels.
The hiking trail GR 6 goes from Eygalieres near
Aurielle, on to St Remy, Les Baux and on to
Tarascon.
Eygalieres offers great hiking and biking amid many
old Structures, some dating to the 1st Century. A
good half day hike is to head east towards the St
Sixte Chapel, a nicely preserved building of the 12th
Century just a mile east of Eygalieres center on the
Orgon Road.
While hiking in Eygalieres you will see small portions of Eygaliere's old walls and
churches. If you are there near Easter week you could join a walk with the villagers of
Eygalieres as they continue one of their ancient customs, honoring their Patron
Saint.
Hiking south of Mouries
Church of St
Laurent at the top
of the hill
On the Tuesday after Easter each year, the people of Eygalieres form a procession and carry the likeness of the
martyred Pope St. Sixte II towards the chapel dedicated to this 3rd Century saint accompanied by Camargue
Guardians on white horses and men and women dressed in the costumes of 17th Century Arles.
They walk to the chapel of Saint Sixte and celebrate mass in the ancient language of Provencals. The site of the
chapel once held a neolithic altar to the rain god and this spring ceremony is a continuation of that plea to the gods
for favorable rains so the legends say.

When To Go To Eygalieres Provence, The South of France: March to November is a good time to visit Provence although November and March will have more rainy days. Campgrounds open in April, although the Winter months are usually without snow but could be cold and there could be a Mistral wind. Otherwise it rarely becomes extremely cold except in the higher elevations. Provence biking and hiking is good any season except that during July, August, and the first half of September some woods and trails will be closed due to fire hazard. The weather in Provence is temperate March, April (50-75 F) and May and the early part of June. These month are considered low season in terms of lodging prices. The end of June, and all of July and August can be crowded at times in Provence as much of Europe takes its summer vacation. Much of France goes on a six-week July August vacation and many people head south. Summer months are warm and dry. April to mid June and September to mid November offer low season vacation rental prices. Weather is ideal in May and June and September October, great months to visit. Showers could come in any month but will be of short duration in the summer, more frequent November to March. Provence is notably dry in summer and depends on irrigation for agriculture.
