El Tajin is an archaeological site in Veracruz State ,Mexico, north of the
port city of Veracruz and near the towns of Poza Rica and Papantla

The site of El Tajin is located at 20*28’N, 97*28’W   and is aligned
North/South'

El Tajin Ruin site is now in a Totonac culture area but researchers believe
that the original builders  of El Tajin were Huasatec people who started
construction in 100 AD

Notable buildings at the El Tajin ruin site complex include the Pyramid of the
Niches, reportedly constructed as a calendar with 365 niches built into a
pyramidal shaped building in 600 AD.
The culture flourished from 600 AD to 1100 AD  ending in 1150 AD

At El Tajin 17 ball courts have been discovered so far.  They are I shaped
courts with many of them having depictions of ritual blood letting and piercing
of the penis carved into the stone walls.
El Tajin Ruin Site covers 500 htrs  and it is believed that during the height of
its prominence, 30,000 inhabitants lived in the area of El Tajin.
There is a Museum at the site.
