Cinque Terre Italy,
  Five Lands For
         Walking
Rio Riomaggiore is a
good place to base for
connection to the railway

and the
shuttle boats
The tour boats and a railway connect the villages.   *no boats to Corniglia.
Rio Riomaggiore is a good place to base for connection to the ferry boats and the
railway which weaves in and out of tunnels along the coast and can offer a means to
reach each village.
The
shuttle boats go between villages and stop at each one except a Corniglia.
Above the villages are
hiking trails that connect each village.

Each of the towns has its own character.  Although now they are only
a few minutes
these villages were once isolated by the steep cliffs which are now terraced intensively.
The network of trails over the terraces  making a
great place for hikers.

In the Five Lands carved out of the rocky hillsides a thousand years ago, the locals fish
the Bay of Ligeria and tend grape vines and olive trees on the terraced hills.
Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mar  provide lodging
in one of the best preserved natural areas of the Mediterranean, now a natural park and
preserve.
Ferry boat service is augmented by the park bus service between the
villages

Cinque Terre Lodging
Cinque Terre
From your B&B or hotel you can walk downhill to the jetty where the boats pull in.
The Ferry boats make it easy to reach the next village and  you could spend your
day walking through the grape orchards and olive groves on trails that connect the
next village and then use the ferry for the return.
From trails high above the Mediterranean Sea you can look down on the village
and their coves by the sea. Each village except Corniglia has a ferry docksite

Hike in the hills or along the shore on the Villa del Amore to the next village,
Manarola. From this trail a dozen little trails lead to outcrops where sunbathers find
some privacy and fishermen find shelter in storms.
  • Cinque Terre Ferry Boats
The boats nose into the rocks and drop a gangway from the bow.  The
boats make it easy to reach each village or return at the end of the day
from a hike.
  • Travel Lightly
Every trail and walkway, path set of steps in Cinque Terre is uphill.
The trip back to your B&B or hotel may include many steps up the
steep hills from where the boat docks.
Cinque Terre Lodging is available in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza,
and Monterosso al Mar, the five villages in Italy connected by hiking trails.
Corniglia does not have ferry boat service but does have train service.
