Cape Cod RV Vacation, Upper Cape Cod Camping
A Cape Cod RV Vacation will offer many good campsites both State and
private. One of the best might be Shawme Crowell State Forest, perhaps the
best kept secret in Sandwich on the upper Cape, and the best run secret at that..
They have camping on sites large enough to have a camp fire and they have bike
trails within the park and many others in the area, especially along the nearby
Cape Cod Canal.
Shawme Crowell has everything that the other State parks have and maybe a
little more. For openers, the sites are spaced well enough apart to avoid the
camping ghetto feeling you get in some parks where every tree has been
removed to make more space for mobile plastic.
The location at the beginning of Cape Cod at Sandwich gives the park an edge
also, Sandwich bills itself as the museum town and rightly so: lots of history,
nature preserves, and exquisite antique buildings, including the Hoxie House,
the oldest house on Cape Cod.
The park accommodates tenters and RV campers with a dump station and water.
(Recycling station, a fine example and introduction to re-use of plastic, glass,
paper) No Hookups. Many miles of bike and walking trails are within the park
and a short drive or bike ride away, you find the Cape Cod Canal with its nearly
14-miles of flat, paved trails that run beside the canal.
Within a few miles of
Shawme Crowell State
Forest, you find Scusset
Beach State Reservation
and its campground. The
fee for Shawme Crowell,
$12 for residents of the
State $15 for others, is
applicable for parking at
Scusset. This is a cold
water beach but the boat
action in the canal can
provide some
entertainment. The canal
can provide some good
striper fishing from the
jetty and the banks and in
salt water there is no need
for a license although you
do need to observe length
limits and bag limits.
On the south side of the
canal, the town of
Sandwich has three salt
water beaches
reached by a gravel trail
from the Cape Cod
Canal Visitors Center
and from the boardwalk.
(Free Parking, Big rig
parking in the overflow
lot next to the lobster
market)
The Cape Cod RV Vacation offers the Cape Cod Canal Bike
Trail's eastern end at the Scusset Beach State Reservation.
The longest elevating center Span bridge in the country when it was built in the mid 30s The Cape Cod
Canal railroad bridge still carries train traffic, a sightseeing train and a train that hauls rubbish to a
recycling mill. Photo at right shows elevating center span lowered for the passage of a train. (Free
parking, large vehicle parking on the north side of the canal railroad bridge lot in Buzzards Bay.)
The flat paved trail runs seven miles on one side of the canal and six and a half on the other. You can walk
your bike over the Sagamore and Bourne bridges to bike both sides of the canal in one day, a total of about
14 miles..
A sightseeing train runs across the bridge
Shawme Crowell State Forest's proximity to the Cape Cod Canal and the village of
Sandwich puts many interesting activities within range including fishing, biking, and
sightseeing at the many museums.
Top right: The oldest house on Cape Cod, the Hoxie House built in 1673, now a museum where
docents give tours and explain in fascinating detail, the life of the colonial Americans. Left, the
Dexter Grist Mill first built in 1647, where a miller demonstrates the trade and grinds corn for
visitors..
Just a short bike ride or drive from Shawme Crowell State Forest you find the center of the
Village of Sandwich and a treasure trove of colonial history, some elegant old buildings, and
several museums. Foremost might be the Sandwich Glass Museum with its 5000 pieces of
rare antique glass and its demonstrations of the glass making trade. Sandwich was once an
important center of glass making where the industry prospered from the eighteen forties up to the
early 1900s.(Free parking, large rig parking at the lower lot)
Sandwich Village has some great old buildings and a ton of galleries, shops, wine store, tea
houses, inns, B&Bs, and a relaxed Cape Cod ambiance that makes it a great place for a
vacation.
