Cape Cod History, Sandwich, Heritage Museum and Gardens:
June brings an explosion of rhododendron flowers to the sprawling horticultural
museum and history park set on over 100 acres of naturalized plantings and formal
gardens that include the Charles Owen Dexter Rhododendron Gardens and
the 40 varieties in the Jack Cowles Rhododendron Gardens.
The plantings start blooming at the end of May and reach their peak in
mid-June. The spectacle continues into July with the flowering of 1,200 varieties
of day lilies planted among 136 cultivars of hosta and 62 varieties of heather and
heath along with herb gardens, a planting of ginkgo trees, and century-old
European Beech trees.
The historic Americana collection assembled by J.K. Lilly 3rd of the
pharmaceutical family includes a replica Shaker round barn which houses an
antique automobile collection numbering 42 vehicles including a Model T and a
1930 Duesenburg Model J Roadster once owned by Gary Cooper. Other displays
include the American History Museum where antique American firearms, antique
toys, military miniatures, and Native American artifacts are on view, and the Cape
Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame museum. The site also has a working carousel
built in 1912 with antique hand-carved Charles Loof horses and an art museum
with American folk art, Currier and Ives lithographs, scrimshaw, and A. Elmer
Crowell bird carvings. Also on the grounds in a flower garden setting, the museum
has restored the East Mill, a windmill which ground grain for 200 years before
curators moved it in 1968 from Orleans, MA to the Heritage Museum.
