Beaches in Oaxaca Mexico
Oaxaca beaches range from the rustic and often deserted Zipolite to the
well-developed and nearly deserted beaches of Huatulco.
The exception might be at Christmas time when many Mexican families
leave the cities and head to the beach.
The other exception would be the beaches at Puerto Escondido where
surfers have made Zicatela Beach and the Mexican Pipeline a legend. In
Puerto Escondido, August and November surfing championships are held.
Otherwise Oaxaca's Pacific Coast beaches at Puerto Escondido,
Zipolite, Mazunte, Puerto Angel, and the 32 beaches of Huatulco are rarely
crowded.
Bus to Beaches in Oaxaca, Pacific Coast Beaches of Oaxaca State
Oaxaca's Pacific Coast Beaches except Puerto Escondido and Huatulco lack an infrastructure that
can handle large numbers of people. There is still no easy way to get to most of the beaches on
Oaxaca's Pacific Coast except via bus and collective taxi or taxi. Oaxaca State's best known beaches
Huatulco and Puerto Escondido have limited but good air service. Otherwise the mountains make a bus
or auto trip from Oaxaca City to the coastal beaches an 8-10 hour ordeal for all but the dedicated
traveler. Night buses offer the best option other than air service in the opinion of some travelers. The
night buses arrive early in the morning and allow for a daylight search for taxis and transportation to you
hotel or posada.
Oaxaca's Pacific Coast Beaches might be in for a change. A new
highway from Oaxaca City to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec will change things
when and if it the highway opens. Scheduled to open in 2012 the highway
will make Huatulco a ten-hour drive from Mexico City and a four-hour trip
from Oaxaca City.
For now, however, Oaxaca's Pacific Coast beaches are a quiet paradise
were you can dine on fresh grilled Dorado beneath a straw palapa and then
stretch out in a hammock between some palms for a mid-day snooze.
