Tours Around Boston Harbor
Boston offers some fine activities for vacationers during the week of the
Harborfest.
Events and places open at all times include the Freedom Trail, a walking
trail that links the Paul Revere House, the Boston Massacre site, Old
North Church, Faneuil Hall/ Quincy Market, the Old Statehouse, the
Bunker Hill Monument, and Old Ironsides, the oldest commissioned
warship and one that fought in the war of 1812.
Boston has long been famous for its artists and art museums including
the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and
Harvard's Fogg and Bush Reisinger. The museum of Contemporary Art
is in a modern building on the waterfront walkway, a walking path along
the harbor that leads from downtown along the harbor.

Keith Lockhart will lead the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra when they perform the
annual Boston Fourth of July concert and Fourth of July fireworks celebration. Each
year a different featured performer joins the Pops Orchestra. This event is free of
charge each year; there is no entrance fee.
The highlight of the festival is always the combining of Tchaikovsky's 1812
Overture played by the Boston Pops Orchestra with the fireworks launched from
barges on the Charles River. Army units fire howitzers as part of this performance
making a powerful visual and auditory event.
The entrance to the shell opens at 9:00 am and visitors swarm in to set blankets on the
grass and make a day of picnicking. Wrist bands will be issued to those occupying
space on the grass in front of the shell.
The best option for reaching this event is public transportation, Boston's subway
system. The Red Line has a Charles Street Station that is close to the River walk and
concert stage shell. The Green Line subway has a station close to the Boston Public
Garden where a pedestrian only bridge leads over to the Charles River.
This is a very popular and crowded event; it is best to start early and make a day of it.
The Concert begins at 8:30 PM The Fireworks display begins at 10:30
PM
Alcohol is not permitted, security checks coolers on entrance. No camping,
cooking, or barbecue grilles.
Boaters are allowed to enter the River at the locks and to tie up or anchor near the
shell. Drinking is prohibited on the waterway. The locks crowd up by mid day or
early afternoon so it is best for boaters to make an early start.
