Bike trailst are paved bicycle trails, others are stone dust, still others, gravel or a loop through the downtown of a village.

The Canalway Trail System is made up of four long stretches of off-road biking.
In the west, the trail runs for 100 miles from Newark near Palmyra to the end of the Canal at Tonawanda near Niagara Falls.
In the center, the 36-mile Old Erie Canal State Park Trail runs near Schenectady. At the eastern end, Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway. trail starts at the Hudson River, and runs west for 60-miles.
