Zipolite Beach, Camping and Lodging on Oaxaca's Pacific Coast
Zipolite's one-street village offers an Internet café and
weekend disco with a few nice restaurants but is otherwise rustic
and remote.

Mazunte and Puerto Angel's beaches nearby offer more of the
same with a few upscale hotels.
Playa Panteon in Puerto Angel offers the most relaxed
swimming beach and a modern hotel at $25-50 a night with
snorkel tours, scuba diving, and sightseeing boat tours leaving
from the beach in front of the hotel.
From Zipolite you can catch a Camioneta to the crossroads and
then a $20 peso bus north to Zicatela Beach, home of the
Mexican Pipe-Line and its more party-ready town of Puerto
Escondido.

Acapulco , further northwest on route 200.
Puerto Escondido offers rental equipment, Lagoon tour
attractions, nightclub happy hours, luxury hotels, and beaches.

An option is to travel north along the coast to Acapulco.

The temperature hovers at 86 with a strong mid day sun. You'll
find bus service efficient and inexpensive, and the lodging
reasonable and readily available except at Christmas time, New
Years, and Easter.
Zipolite Beach offers camping at several locations on
the beach. Other lodging options include Posadas
San Cristobal and Posada Shambala at the west end
of Zipolite Beach.

Posada Shambala at the west end
of the beach offers inexpensive
accommodations and a great view.
At the west end, Posada San
Cristobal offers rooms with
restaurant, private bathroom, shower,
200 Pesos.
Posada Mexico, next to San
Cristobal, offers rooms and
restaurant, 200-300.

You can find posadas right on the
beach with restaurants, bars,
hammock areas, and a lifeguard
station nearby for 200 pesos.

with modern rooms and parking for
500 Pesos.
From Zipolite you can
cab or Collective cab
(Camioneta) to Puerto
Angel for small waves.
Go in the other
direction for Mazunte
where you can find Eco
touring and the Turtle
Museum and rescue
project.
At the east end of the road at Roca
Blanca find camping on the beach
for 50 Pesos.
At times camping can be as little
as 25 Pesos per person.
Zipolite is located forty miles south
of Puerto Escondido. Zipolite is a
low rise beach community that
caters to surfers, a few nudists, and
independent travelers.
The attraction is the sunrises and
sunsets along with the lodging right
on the beach for $15 -$20 a night
USD except during holidays.
Surfing is the best option at
Zipolite; the rip currents can be
dangerous. A lifeguard is on duty
and will advise on the conditions for
swimming.
The better swimming beach is at
Puerto Angel
Zipolite's Pacific Coast beach
never sees crowds except at
Christmas/ New Years and Easter
Vacation.
Reach Zipolite Beach by bus from
Puerto Escondido to Pochutla and
then collective camionetta or taxi to
Zipolite. Or, if arriving from Puerto
Escondido, ask the local bus driver
to stop at the crossroads for
Zipolite/Mazunte and then get a
collectivo or Camioneta to Zipolite.

Reach Zipolite by air from
Oaxaca's airport (OAX) to Puerto
Escondido and then on OCC bus,
Estrella Blanca Bus, or local bus
southeast along the coast to
Pochutla, and from there a short
taxi ride.

Huatulco, and then Pochutla. (10

Second Class buses leave Oaxaca
City's Second Class terminal and
go over the mountains to Puerto
Escondido or to Pochutla. (8 hours)
Vans makes a run to Pochutla. (6
hours) for 120 Pesos
The mountain driving can be tough
on those prone to motion sickness
and the buses can be cold.

How to Reach Zipolite from Oaxaca City, San Cristobal de las Casas, and Acapulco:
Four different bus routes reach the area of Zipolite, Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, and Huatulco, on Oaxaca's
Pacific Coast.
First Class service reaches Pochutla via Salina Cruz and Huatulco on OCC bus from Oaxaca City or ADO Bus
from Palenque and San Cristobal de las Casas. From Huatulco the bus route goes northwest along the coast to
the transportation hub of Pochutla (Zipolite stop) and then to the beach town of Puerto Escondido.
Estrella Blanca Bus runs a first class bus route from Acapulco to Puerto Escondido, Pochutla, and Huatulco,
Pochutla, Huatulco, and Salina Cruz are first class transportation hubs for ADO and OCC bus routes to San
Cristobal de las Casas and Palenque via Villahermosa, (Tabasco and Chiapas State)
Estrella Blanca Buses run first Class service, 10 trips daily, between Puerto Escondido and Acapulco along
Pacific Coast Route 200.
Second class buses run over Route 175 and Route 135 from Oaxaca City, making direct runs over the mountains
to Pochutla and Puerto Escondido. (8 hours)
Van Service runs frequently from Oaxaca City to Pochutla, 120 pesos, six hour trip over the mountains.

Look for mosquito protection, either a mosquito net over the bed or screens on
the windows.
Ask about these options:
- Wifi, there are two good internet cafés on the small main street at Roca
Blanca, on the west end of Zipolite
- Hot Water, not many posada offer hot water
- Restaurant with bar,
- Secure parking.
