Yellowstone National Park's many geysers, fumaroles, hot springs,
and mud pots result from superheated steam that rises to the surface and
pushes water ahead of it full of dissolved minerals that coat the rocks in
unusual colors. A boardwalk through the field of geysers gives access
on otherwise unstable ground.
Yellowstone National Park's Upper Geyser Basin is the
location of Old Faithful and many other geysers, fumaroles,
hot springs, and mud pots that send superheated steam to the
surface along with dissolved minerals that bring unusual colors
to the rocks in the geyser field.
A walkway, partly accessible to wheeled chair and baby
carriage (meeting ADA standards or accessible with
assistance) extends through the geyser field, the largest
concentrations of geysers in the world.
Predictable geysers are Old Faithful, Castle, Grand, Daisy,
Riverside, and Great Fountain. Castle for instance, erupts
every thirteen hours with a spray that can last 20 minutes.
Old Faithful is the most frequent in its schedule and will
send 3000 to 8000 gallons of boiling water, 100 to 180 feet in
the air during its 2 to 5 minute display.
The water expelled runs over the surface and colors the rocks
and then enters the Firehole River which runs through the
