Yellowstone National Park Geysers, Old Faithful, Upper Geyser Basin
Yellowstone National Park Geysers such as
Old Faithful and
Grand Geyser, above, are
predicable in their eruptions
Yellowstone National Park Geyser Old
Faithful gets its name because it erupts
approximately every 90 minutes,
varying from between 51 to 120
minutes.
Yellowstone National Park is in reality a volcano, or more accurately, the sunken caldera of an ancient
volcano that last erupted
640,000 years ago. The caldera, 30 miles wide by 45 ;miles long in a roughly
oval shape, encompasses Yellowstone Lake, with depths of 430 feet, and the Yellowstone River, a course
that conveys lake water through Yellowstone's Grand Canyon to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and
eventually to the Gulf of Mexico.
The
volcanic nature of Yellowstone National Park accounts for the many geysers and hot springs
including the famous
Old Faithful Geyser, named because of its predictable nature.. Molten lava still
flows beneath
Yellowstone's surface, between 3 and 8 miles deep, and this causes the expulsion of
superheated ground water that we see as steam spewing from the many
geysers..
Yellowstone National Park's
volcanic activity
continues in the
many
geysers, fumaroles, hot
springs, and mud pots
located
throughout the park.
The sunken caldera that forms
Yellowstone National Park overlies an
area of magma that sends
superheated steam to the surface.
Although the last eruption of the
volcano was 640,000 years ago, the
potential for another exists and could
happen at any time.
Beneath the surface of the 30 mile by
45 ;mile caldera, molten rock or
magma heats ground water and sends
it boiling to the surface continually or
as in the case of several
predictable
geysers like Old Faithful and Grand
Geyser,
on a relatively predictable
schedule.  The
rangers post these
eruption times at the geysers.

Much of Upper Geyser Basin is wheel chair and baby carriage accessible.  Wooden walkways
extend through the field of Geysers.
Yellowstone National Park's volcanic nature spawns many geysers, fumaroles, hot springs, and mud
pots, the most famous geyser being Old Faithful. Located at Upper Geyser Basin, Old Faithful has a
predictable enough nature that rangers post the eruption times and viewers take a
seat in a semi-circular
grandstand to watch.
Castle Geyser, erupting every 13 hours
Yellowstone
National Park's
Upper Geyser
Basin
is the site of
predictable geysers
such as
Old
Faithful, Castle,
Grand, Daisy,
Riverside, and
Great Fountain.

Castle for instance,
erupts every
thirteen hours with
a spray that can
last 20 minutes.
