On the East Coast of the US,  Cape Cod has many old trail and railroad  right of ways that are now
paved bike trails.  The Bike trails are great for safe family biking, hiking, or wheelchair and baby carriage
access.
The Coastal Villages Trail follows the coast along Rhode Island sound through New England Fishing
Villages that once were noted for sea Captains during the age of sail.  Follow country roads from Newport
Rhode Island to Little Compton RI, and then to the Village of New Bedford and its whaling museum.

A  History Vacation  can follow the path of George Washington as he crossed the Delaware River in
Pennsylvania.  
Later in the Revolutionary War the Battle of Yorktown is commemorated at the site in Yorktown, Virginia.
Places with a marine connection and loads of history, the Maine Coast and the Erie Barge Canal.
Bike trails along the Erie canal for a good portion of its 400 miles make for safe family biking.
The Maine Coast offers transportation museums, cold water beaches,  and outlet shopping.
