Travel To Les Baux-de-Provence, The South of France
Perhaps the most visited village in the Alpilles Hills,  Les Baux-de-Provence occupies a high rocky ledge
Between St Remy and Mouries, about 30 miles south of Avignon.  From the hill,  you can see the Rhone
River Delta and the flat land of the Camargue.  The promontory commands an excellent view of the valley,
making it long a strategic position for settlement.
Signs of early settlements have been found at Les Baux that go back to 6th century BC Celts.
Even today a climb to the ledge at the top of the high parking lot will reveal stone works and cave dwellings.
The fortress, now a ruin, housed a line of kings and queens that  ruled the surrounding area from the
second century to the 12 the century.  The town was then ruled by French kings until being destroyed in
1632 by order of Cardinal Richelieu.  He wanted to punish the people for revolting against French
Catholic rule as he attempted to unify France under a central government
The village was then made a Principality and given to the Grimaldi Family, the rulers of Monaco

Speed limits will be clearly marked and the Rotary will be a welcome site with its directions to various
towns.  Gassing up is similar to US with credit card and automatic shut-off at modern pumps. Car rental are
available in all large cities and at many TGV Train Stations..

When To Go To Provence, The South of France
Cherries,  apricots, and melons ripen in June. The end of June sees the lavender ripening and the
fields turning purple about 30 miles north of Les Baux.  Sunflowers are in full bloom end of June.  
High on the vacation list could be a vacation rental, vacation Gite, or a villa with a full kitchen, a food
chopper, grinder, or a processor so that when visiting Provence on a culinary vacation you can do some
healthy French cooking. Rentals are more available in May, June, September October: either side of the
July August high season.
Travel To Les Baux-de-Provence
Reach Provence by high speed roads from Paris

Fast trains (TGV) from Paris, reach Avignon, Nimes, or Aix-en-Provence, large cities not too distant from
Les Baux.
RyanAir out of Gatwick or Standsted, London fly into Marseille.

Avignon: from Avignon it is a thirty mile drive south to Les Baux -de-Provence. Bus service is available
from Avignon as are rental cars at the TGV train station.   Avignon is the nearest large city to Les
Baux-de-Provence with TGV service and one of the principle cities of Provence. (TGV-Train a Grande
Vitesse-High Speed Train)

Arles is another major city in Provence that has bus and Train Service. Arles is 12 miles east of Les Baux.
The TGV station is in Nimes and from there conventional trains or buses serve nearby Arles, about 20
miles southeast.

In the south,
Marseilles has a large airport north of the city with surface transportation to all areas of Provence.
