Surfing Michoacan:  Nexpa, El Faro, La Ticla, Playa Azul
The shoreline between Lazaro
Cardenas and Tecoman in
Colima State runs for 280 miles
through what could be the
least
visited coast.
 Highway Route
200 hugs a south facing coast
where you will find some
legendary surfing but not
much in the way of infrastructure
to support large numbers of
visitors.  A blessing say the
ardent who don't mind  a little
discomfort if they can have the
surf to themselves.
In
Michoacan, it is easy to find
that nearly
deserted beach
and that tube wave.
Flights are available to
Manzanillo, a resort area to the
north where bus service covers
Route 200 between Manzanillo
and the industrial town of
Lazaro Cardenas or further
south to Zihuatenajo.  In
between, find some tiny villages
and some
deserted surfing
beaches
.
Nexpa:
At the mouth of the Neixpa River on the northern side, near Bahia Bufadero, an up and coming area dedicated
to surfing is still unknown but building a reputation for its swells and for its infrastructure.
The area is 54 kilometers from the town of La Mira and Playa Azul.  Another 18 K south to Lazaro Cardenas
for provisions, banking, communications and civilization.  June September best, incoming tide
El Faro:
On Punta Tehupan, go through the village and find camping near the abandoned lighthouse.  This area is
180 K North of Lazaro Cardenas and makes a good base for trips if you have a vehicle.
Palapa restaurants and deserted beaches
La Ticla:
North of El Faro find La Ticla at the mouth of the
Ostula River, (Ostuta) 90 kilometers south of the
city of Tecoman, 200 K north of La Mira and Playa
Azul
Play Azul:
A good base in Michoacan State for trips north on route
200 to find more deserted beaches, Playa Azul is a miles
long beach with fishing village and palapa restaurants.
The town is small with a few low-rise hotels and posadas.
Playa Azul is near enough to Lazaro Cardenas to provide
plenty of civilization but does have good surfing.  Summer
swells can be consistent and large on this south facing
beach.
Reach Playa Azul via combi for 15 pesos from Lazaro
Cardenas.  The combis pass along the divided highway a
block north of the Estrellas Blanca Bus Station.   The
beach turnoff is a little nortwest of La Mira
When searching for that perfect beach, look out for the wildlife.  The fresh water lagoons can harbor some
unfriendly creatures.
Most folks in the
remote fishing
villages wont mind
if you pitch a tent.
Offer 50 pesos for
parking.
Rustic cabanas
are available in
many places.
Best surfing on Mexico's Pacific Coast, November to
April.
