Entering at the town of Spearfish from
Sturgis
on Route I-90, the east coast to west
coast interstate highway, you find the City of
Spearfish and its large city run campgrounds
near the fish hatchery museum.  
  • Canyon Scenic Byway Camping
On Route 14-A, just east of the City of
Spearfish, you find the Scenic Byway through
Spearfish Canyon.
  • Timon and Rod and Gun
    Campgrounds
Half way between Spearfish and Deadwood,
enter route 222 at Savoy near Spearfish Falls
and find the gravel road to the Rod and Gun
and Timon campgrounds.
Sites are $15 a night, self-pay envelope $7.50
for Golden Age Pass holders. No hookups, no
dump station.
Tent and RV camping are available
on National Forest land.   Self-pay
envelopes, correct change
advisable.  The sites are small sites
with no shade at the Rod and Gun
camp and shade at the Timon
camp, two miles further in on SD
220, the Roughlock Falls road.

No dump stations available at these
sites.
After entering at
Savoy  for the
Roughlock Falls,
 go three miles
to the Rod and Gun Campground or
two more to the Timon sites. Pick
an unoccupied site, pay at the
kiosk, and clip your receipt to the
post.
Cross country travelers can use the parks as a convenient stopover on the way west or east on route I-90.  
The nearby Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway ends in the town of Lead and then brings you to Deadwood.

These are towns near Mount Rushmore and scenic stopovers for east/west travelers.  Riders heading for
the Sturgis Rally in August will find Timon and Rod and Gun quiet campgrounds compared to the park in
the center of the town of Spearfish or those in Sturgis.
From the Rod and Gun and Timon
sites a  vast network of gravel
roads offers hiking and biking in
the canyon.

Hiking trails follow the Little
Spearfish River along its course
near Roughlock Falls and the two
camp grounds.
The streams in the area are
stocked with brown and rainbow
trout.
Two posts mark the site of the
filming of last scenes from the
movie Daces With Wolves,
about a mile beyond
Roughlock Falls
Spearfish Canyon

trout-filled streams,
the
Little Spearfish
and the Spearfish
Rivers.

The streams are
stocked with
rainbow and brown
trout

The City of
Spearfish offers a
large
fish hatchery/
museum
 and a
large
campgrounds  
near the center of
the village.
Roughlock Falls
In the Spearfish River and Little Spearfish River, the State stocks Brook and Rainbow
Trout.
For those Rally visitors who want a little less
crowded campground, Spearfish Canyon
might
be
ideal.
  • Spearfish Canyon Camping
In the southwest corner of South Dakota about
36 miles west of
Sturgis and 65 miles from
Mount Rushmore,
Spearfish Canyon offers some
great camping and hiking . The Canyon is about
ten miles from Lead/ Deadwood.
The area is a preserved landscape of pine forest
and meadow with the
Spearfish River running
through it. Brook and Rainbow Trout are stocked
by the state in the streams.

the area, Rod and Gun
and Timon
Sturgis Bike Week camping at two Spearfish
Canyon campgrounds offers quieter
campgrounds and a scenic drive 36 miles  
from  Sturgis on the road to Deadwood.

The nearest large city to the Black Hills is Rapid
City South Dakota. Air service reaches Rapid City
from hubs in Denver and Chicago.
  • Auto
Rental cars are available at the airport. From
Rapid City take scenic Route 44 east to Interior
and the Badlands National Park  or take Route
Route 90 West to Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood,
Rushmore.

temperature can reach over 100 f.    Cool in May and
September,  Cold and winter snows October to April

and August can have thunderstorms with hail.
