The City of Spearfish is located in the
southwest corner of South Dakota about 46
miles west of Rapid City and 65 miles from
Mount Rushmore. The Spearfish Canyon
runs through the Black Hills about ten miles
from Lead/ Deadwood. In the town of
spearfish find a large campground and tours
of the fish hatchery.
Route 14, a paved road, connects the City of
Spearfish and the Town of Lead near
Deadwood. The area was once managed
by the mining companies and now is a
preserved landscape of pine forest and
meadow with hard-packed gravel and paved
roads and the Spearfish River running
beside the paved road and feeder streams
running beside the gravel road Route 222.
Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway
Entering at the City of Spearfish from Route I-
90, the East Coast to West Coast interstate
highway, you find Spearfish Canyon Scenic
Byway, Route 14, just east of the town of
Spearfish.
From the scenic Byway a gravel road, SD
222 leaves the paved Highway at Savoy and
becomes a great biking and hiking road
which goes all the way to Wyoming where it
connects with Route I-90.
Enter route 222 at Savoy near Spearfish
Falls and find two campgrounds, Timon and
Rod and Gun.
. Sites are $15 a night, self-pay envelope
$7.50 for Golden Age Pass holders. No
hookups, no dump station.
spearfish Canyon offers tent and RV camping in the park for $15 per night, $7.50 with Golden Age
Pass.
Spearfish Canyon is National Forest land. Self-pay envelopes, correct change advisable. The
sites are small sites with no shade at the Rod and Gun Campground and shade at the Timon
Campground, two miles further in on SD 220, the Roughlock Falls road.
No dump stations available at these sites. Pit toilets and firepits.
Enter at Savoy for the Roughlock Falls and go three miles to the Rod and Gun Campground, or
two more miles to the Timon sites. Pick an unoccupied site, pay at the kiosk, and clip your receipt
to the post. Private campgrounds are available at Spearfish, a large one at the fish hatchery.
RV vacationers can use the park as a convenient stopover on the way west or east on Route I-90. The
park's Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway eventually comes to the town of Lead and then Deadwood,
towns near Mount Rushmore and stopovers for most east/west travelers.

A vast network of paved and gravel roads offers great hiking and biking in Spearfish Canyon. Hiking trails
follow the Little Spearfish River along its course near Roughlock Falls where there are two camp grounds, Rod
and Gun and Timon. Paved roads are well-maintained and scenic.

Route 222, a hard packed dirt and gravel road
offers biking and hiking along the stream. Trails
into the pine forests on both sides of the road
offer hiking. Find two campgrounds on this road.
