Mid day in Little Antelope Slot
Canyon, Arizona
Little Antelope Slot Canyon is no Grand Canyon but imagine being inside a cave-like canyon completely surrounded by red rock. A slot canyon is just that and at Little Antelope Canyon we had all the time we needed to make photographs.

The slot canyons have an intriguing and endless variety of patterns, shapes, and colors but keep in mind
that the slot canyons are underground conduits for rain water and can flood rapidly during thunderstorms.
The Navajo who run the canyon will lower rope ladders in an emergency but it is best not to enter when
there is any threat of storms even when the storms are miles distant.

Slot Canyon Photography: What can a Graduated Neutral Density Filter Do For Your Photos of a Slot Canyon
|
In this example of a landscape,
a reading of the sky and of the
foreground differed by 4 stops
without the Graduated Neutral
Density Filter in place
With the addition of four
stops of graduated Neutral
Density Filter the sky retains
detail and saturation
A slot Canyon has the same
disparity of exposure. In a slot
canyon the sunlight streams in from
the top and the foreground or side
walls will be in shadow.
Take a reflected reading of the
near foreground and one of the
upper portion of the canyon. If there
is a three or four stop difference,
expose for the foreground and
attach a three or more stop
graduated Neutral Density filter to
your lens.
The Grand Canyon has the same
broad range of exposures and can
be balanced out with a GND.
In a slot canyon the balancing of the exposure with a graduated neutral density filter improves the
photo at times and at other times exposing for a broader range of exposure and more contrast
(darks and lights) without the filters will work best.
