Shawme Crowell State Forest, Sandwich, MA, Cape Cod Camping
Shawme Crowell State Forest might be the best
run and most convenient campground on Cape Cod.
Shawme Crowell has everything that the camper
needs. The sites are spaced well apart, the
location at the beginning of Cape Cod at Sandwich
gives the park access to Sandwich the museum town
and its history, nature preserves, and exquisite antique
buildings, including the oldest house on Cape Cod.
The park accommodates tenters and RV campers with
a dump station and water. (Recycling station for the
re-use of plastic, glass, paper) No Hookups. Many
miles of bike and walking trails are within the park and
a short drive or bike ride away, you find the Cape Cod
Canal with its nearly 14-miles of flat, paved trails that
run beside the Cape Cod Canal.
Within a few miles of Shawme Crowell State Forest, you find Scusset Beach State Reservation and its
campground. The fee for Shawme Crowell, $12 for residents of the State $15 for others, is applicable for
parking at Scusset.
Scusset Beach is a cold water beach but the boat action in the canal can provide some entertainment. The
canal can provide some good striper fishing from the jetty and the banks and in salt water there is no need
for a license although you do need to observe length limits and bag limits.
You can walk your bike over the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges to use the full 14 miles of
Cape Cod Canal trail.
On the south side of the canal, the town of Sandwich has three salt water beaches reached by a
gravel trail from the Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center and from the boardwalk. (Free Parking, Big
rig parking in the overflow lot next to the lobster market)
