If you are devote of Georgia O'Keeffe, you will enjoy the collection
of her paintings and sculptures at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum
which displays and archives over a thousand of her works.
One of eight museums in Santa Fe devoted to art, the museum
displays her very early watercolors and sketches, her oils, and her
sculptures and watercolors she did as her eyesight and health failed.
She lived her last two years in Santa Fe, still creating art as she had
done for most of her 98 years.
With 310 sunny days each year, dry air at 7000
feet, and the spectacular sunsets, Santa Fe
inspires artists and offers plenty of outdoor activity
for visitors
Shopping tops the list for some visitors to Santa
Fe.
Santa Fe has 200 art galleries with work from the
best known painters and photographers making a
tour of the streets of Santa Fe like a day in the best
of art museums.
Earthy, soft, and unifying some find Santa Fe's
"Pueblo Revival" architecture, a building code
mandate that some locals deride as "Fakeadobe,"
The earth tones add subtlety to a walk in the city and
become part of the enduring motif. The codes also
may have saved Santa Fe's original adobes,
including the oldest house in the country, one
that comes complete with a resident ghost.
According to the historians, Spanish colonists
from Mexico arrived with a group of Tlaxcalan
natives in the early 1600s and refurbished a tenth
century pueblo on the indigenous adobe model.
They built the San Miguel Chapel in 1608, now the
oldest church in the country, its original walls still
visible beneath a 1710 reconstruction, and they built
the oldest government building in continuous
use, the Palace of the Governor, now home to the
State History Museum.
Santa Fe's Perfect Climate
"Santa Fe is home to more artists per capita than any other region in the country." so the guidebooks say.

In the center of Santa Fe you can visit an 1873 Gothic church with a unique staircase, a work of art in wood.
Legend tells of a mysterious carpenter who arrived on a donkey with few tools and although without blueprint,
miraculously built a set of unsupported stairs to the choir loft in the shape of a double helix.
According to legend, the carpenter disappeared shortly after finishing the structure. He had built two turns of 360
degrees with no central support. The entirely peg construction of 33 steps baffled the nuns and they attributed
the work to St. Joseph himself.
Santa Fe offers the visitor a variety of activities. On Memorial Day weekend a motorcycle rally to the north
will fill the hotels and make accommodations scarce. Other dates of interest include a September Chile
and Wine Festival and spring and summer art festivals.
Accommodations in the area run from the basic to the exquisite, and including the Abiquiu Inn near the home
of Georgia O'Keeffe. In Taos to the north there is the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, once a vacation stop for
D. H. Laurence.
Check with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe to find visiting times to her house in Abiquiu.
