San Jose Mogote or San Jose el Mogote
Archaeological Ruin Site is an important Ruin site
because it is the oldest stone city found to date in Mexico.
Built in the valley now called Oaxaca, San Jose El Mogote
was first settled in 1500 BC and developed one of the first
written languages according to glyphs found at the site. As
the nearby city of Monte Alban took shape in 500 BC San
Jose Mogote lost its importance as a political center as
power shifted to the larger city.
Trade with the Olmec culture is evident in the ceramic and
stone pottery and sculpture at the small museum next to
the largely unrestored ruin. Recent study has shown that
ceramic goods flowed both ways between San Jose el
Mogote and the Olmec centers on the gulf coast.

Contact with the Olmec culture of veracruz or trade activity is evident in the ceramic and stone pottery
and sculpture displayed at San Jose's small museum next to the largely unrestored ruin. Recent study
has shown that ceramic goods might have flowed both ways between San Jose el Mogote and the
Olmec centers on the gulf coast.
