collection of classics.
Heritage Museum and
Gardens is a sprawling
history park that offers an
auto museum housed in an
antique Shaker barn, a
sports museum, an antique
carousal, and an antique
windmill all set within acres
of day lilies and a 75-acre
Rhododendron garden with
125 cultivars blooming in
late May and early June.
The Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich,
Cape Cod offers collections of historic Americana set
within a 100 acre formal and naturalized garden.
Within the gardens the museum has a windmill that is
over two hundred years old.
Rhododendrons predominate and are part of a
collection called after its founder, Charles Owen
Dexter, the Dexter Rhododendron Gardens.
The site also includes a colonial house and herb
garden.
Dexter was an industrialist who bought the property in
1921 and, as a hobby, hybridized plants, concentrating
on Rhododendrons. He developed and gave away
many unique cultivars while failing to keep careful
records of his work. Even so, he became famous as a
hybridizer of Rhododendrons and many of his unique
plants are in the museum gardens.
The property passed to several owners after the death of Mr. Dexter in 1943, finally becoming the property
of the Lilly family of Eli Lilly Co. Several Lilly family members had amassed collections of memorabilia
which found their way into the museum: Objects of military history, an automobile collection, a carousel, an
art collection and an antique windmill.
Nearby museums include the Dexter Grist Mill and the Sandwich Glass Museum
Rhododendrons are found in nature throughout the world in both Alpine and tropical settings except in
South America and Africa. The northern hemispheres and particularly northern Asia, the Himalayas, Nepal
are noted for many of the 1000 species found in the wild. There are over 28,000 cultivars of
Rhododendron. Wiki Excerpt
