Hiking
In The
south of
France
Provence has many trails
connecting the villages. Often they
are well marked in the local
language. You can hike through the
narrow cobbled streets of one
village and then into the hills on
networks of trails through the groves
and vineyards for the hike to the
next village. A good map and
compass/gps will keep you on track.
Each village has a market day
where the fruits and vegetables will
be fresh or you can find the produce
vendor to stock up on the low-fat
crushed olive tapinades spiced with
basil, the fresh fruits, goat cheese,
and French bread. Your trail might
lead to a local vineyard for a bottle
of wine to complete the picnic lunch
on the way to the next village.
In the Luberon Mountains , the
Alpilles , and Vaucluse Plateau, the
villages where you will find lodging
are usually no more than six to ten
miles apart
Hiking may not be allowed in July
and August, however, when forest
fire danger is high
East of Avignon, in the area of the Luberon Mountains and Vaucluse Plateau, the
farmers grow lavender for a late June and mid July harvest.
