The Medieval city of Avignon is two and a half hours away from Paris
by the high speed TGV  train.
Avignon has extensive local bus service to much of Provence along the
Rhone.  The bus routes are covered by small local companies that
transport school children for the most part.  There could be limited or no
service on Sundays.

  • Arles Bus Routes
Bus service based in Arles covers the region from Arles to Marseilles  The small
local bus line makes it possible to visit St. Remy, Fontvieille, Les Baux, Mouries,
Salon de Provence, Aix-en-Provence, and Marseilles on buses that make a five
hour round trip.
  • Arles to Marseilles
Buses leave Arles for round trips to Marseilles on the hour approximately from 7
am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. They stop at many small towns and larger
cities on the way. From Arles to Marseilles takes two and a half hours

Bus From Provence Cities
  • Avignon,
Avignon is one of the main cities in Provence and as such provides a center of
small, local
bus activity.  Many bus routes leave Avignon and go in all  directions.
  • Central Provence,  
Nearly all of Provence is covered by local bus service running six days a week.  
Some of the lines run five days during school weeks only, others run seven days.

The larger cities such as Nimes,
Arles, Avignon, St Remy  Aix-en-Provence, Nice
and
Marseilles have frequent service,.  This service extends to the smaller towns
along the route.  In some cases you can ask to be dropped at a certain village
along the way that is not a scheduled stop.
  • East to Apt
A line runs east of Avignon and covers Provence Villages near Apt and Saignon,
east of
Gordes and connects as far south as St Tropez and Marseilles.
  • North on the Rhone
Another line leaves Avignon and runs north to Montelimar and Carpentras.
Buses from
Avignon reach Chateauneuf du Pape to the north.
  • South
Bus service from Avignon reaches Arles to the southwest

  • Mediterranean Coast, Provence
Buses based on the Mediterranean coast serve the area of Grasse, Vence  and
Nice.  Service is available all along the coast from Marseilles to St Tropez and
further east.  

  • Camargue, Rhone Delta
The Camargue is the exception, it has little bus service.  Buses from Nimes and
Arles reach St Maries de la Mer in the Camargue.  Buses from Aigues Mortes also
serve St. Maries de la Mer.  Buses from Nimes run south to Montpellier.
  • Aix-en-Provence
From Aix-en-Provence, bus service reaches north to Orange and south to
Marseilles.  Buses run west to Arles and east to Nice.  
Provence buses are small local buses that make many stops in most cases.
