Palenque Bus Transportation From Oaxaca is provided by ADO
with first class bus service to the ADO terminal in Palenque.
ADO runs very modern bus service that connects through Villahermosa and
reaches Palenque downtown, 6 miles by taxi or collective taxi to the ruin site.
Collective taxi, (van) the best option at 10 Pesos.
ADO first class buses also reach Palenque via OCC buses through San
Cristobal de las Casas.
The OCC bus passes through Ocosingo where a station offers a stop for the ruin
of Tonina. From there the ADO bus, OCC, continues to Palenque's terminal
where service is available to Merida, Cancun and many other cities.
Palenque is a city of 85,000 where you can find accommodations at all price
ranges.
Campgrounds, hotels, and posadas are plentiful in the town with campgrounds,
inns, posadas, and luxury hotels on the entrance road to the archaeological site.
The area called the Cañada has a group of hotels and posadas of all price ranges
and handy to transportation to the ruin site from the Cabeza Maya.
Hotels are busy December 15 through New Years and at Easter, otherwise, many
option are available.
Transportation to Palenque Ruin Site and Museum, catch the white
Van collective taxis that make runs to the ruin about every 15 minutes and cost
about $.85 USD. (Ten Pesos) They round the rotary at the Cabeza Maya, the large
sculptured head at the entrance to the town.
Once they reach the ruin, the vans park for ten or fifteen minutes and wait to fill.
Transportation to Other Mayan Ruin Sites.
Two agencies run no frills collectivos for the 90 miles to the Mayan Site of
Yaxchilan in the Frontera and to the crossroads for Mayan Bonampak Ruin. 70-100
peso, one way, high season December
Find the Chamoan terminal located near the Cabeza Maya sculpture, just down
the hill and to the right side of the ruins road. Trips leave hourly or so starting at six
am.
Transportation Benemiento runs vans from the same terminal and make the same
trip starting at 400 am for 70 Pesos. Vans run hourly until 5 pm.(schedules change
with demand)
Tour agencies located in the town of Palenque also run guided trips.
Immigration authorities are active on the road that borders Guatemala, best to
have a passport and copy of your Mexican visa.
Bonampak is an abandoned stone city built by the Mayans between the 5th and
10th centuries AD near the Usumacinta River and the border with Guatemala in
Mexico's southern most State of Chiapas.
Bonampak was once an important Mayan political center allied with nearby
Yaxchilan. The Mayan inhabitants abandoned the city of Bonampak around 1000
AD.
From the city of Palenque, collectivos and tour buses make the two and a half hour
trip to Bonampak and Yaxchilan. Tours also leave Palenque and follow a
different road for the cascades of Agua Azule and for San Cristobal de las Casas.
On that road, the Mayan Ruin of Tonina can be reached from the town of
Ocosingo which also has an ADO terminal.
