A few hours drive east and north of Newport find the Coastal Villages Trail 1938 of the famous Concordia
sailing yawls
and a haven for small boat sailors.
Back in 1898, an event largely overlooked occurred near here when retired China Trade Sea Captain
Joshua Slocum returned after a three-year solo circumnavigation of the globe in his 37-foot oyster sloop,
Spray, the
first ever solo voyage around the world. He visited Newport on his return an he wrote  an
ingenuous no-frills adventure yarn about his solo voyage in vigorous prose sure to please.

Route 24 east leads to Fall River, MA and its factory outlets.  Also there are the steel-hulled warships at the
floating museum of
Battleship Cove. There you can tour the Battleship Massachusetts, the Submarine
Lionfish
, the Destroyer J P Kennedy, two PT boats, and a Russian guided-missile cruiser . The nearby,
outlet malls occupy old mill buildings.
How To Reach Newport Rhode Island by Auto: From the north, take Route 24 to Route
24/138 in Triverton RI  and follow it to Route 114 which will lead to the center of Newport.
From the west and south, go to Providence and find Route 195 east to Route 24.
From Connecticut and points south, take I-95 north to Route 38, exit 3A, and cross the
Jamestown Bridge and the Newport Bridge, exiting on Farewell St to Americas Cup Avenue  
to the center of Newport.

Getting to Newport Rhode Island by Air:  The nearest large city to Newport RI . in the
north is  Boston.(
BOS)  From the south, New York City is a 100 mile drive on Route
I-95 north to route 138.
Air service reaches Boston from other major hubs and cities.
Rental cars are available
at the airport. From Boston take Route I- 95 south to route 24.
Airlines serve Providence RI  
TF Green Airport (Warwick RI.   (PVD)   and Hartford Conn.
Bradley International Airport,
(BDL) smaller cities closer to Newport than Boston or
New York City.
Train service is available to Providence RI from major cities via Amtrak.  bus service
