Roman Glanum, twelve miles south of
Avignon and a mile out of Saint
Remy, was an important showplace
judging by its monumental buildings.
The Roman city of Glanum started as
a Celtic-Ligurian settlement, then
became a Greek city, and finally,
after a complete make over in the
first century BC, a Roman city and
colony.
The city fell to Germanic invaders in
260 AD and lay in ruins until
excavations began in 1921. It is
considered among the most
important Roman archaeological site
in France.
Glanum is The most significant Roman City in Provence perhaps. The ruin
lay abandoned since the third century AD until a 1921 excavation revealed
an extensive group of monumental buildings..

Glanum lies astride the road
through the mountains, twelve
miles south of Avignon. A mile
below Glanum you will find the
town of Saint Remy.
The Roman city of Glanum had
first been a Celtic-Ligurian
settlement, around 600 BC, and
then became a Greek city around
300 BC.
The Romans then rebuilt the city
in the first century BC, making it
one of the most important cities
in Provence, second perhaps to
nearby Arles.
The Romans built extensive
aqueducts in the area to bring
water to power grain mills. These
remnants are still found while
hiking in the area

Roman Glanum lay un-excavated until 1921, a quarry of cut stone for the residents of St Remy a mile to the north.
The Roman ruin was one of many in the area including a nearby aqueduct and mill.
The site had been a Celtic-Ligurian settlement, then became a Greek city, and finally a first-century Roman colony.
