Twelve miles south of Avignon and
a mile out of Saint Remy, the
Roman city of Glanum started as a
celtic Ligurian settlement then
became a Greek city, and finally,
after a complete make over in the
first century BC, a Roman city and
colony.
The Romans built aqueducts and
grain mills in the area and shipped
grain down the Rhone and into the
Mediteranean.
The city fell to Germanic invaders in
260 AD and lay in ruins until
excavations began in 1921. It is
considered among the most
important Roman archaeological
site in France.
