Erie Canalway or Erie Rail Trails, The
Canal towpaths and rail lines have been
turned into bike trails
The Canalway is a largely off-road trail that
goes between Albany and Buffalo using
abandoned rail lines, old trolley lines, and
discontinued haul roads where draft
animals once pulled the Erie Canal
Barges.
Remnants of the 1825 Erie Canal, the first of three versions, offer historic sites and old towpaths where
mules once pulled the boats and now bikers ride
Detailed Canalway Trail maps
Some of the trails are paved bicycle trails along the canal using the old roads
used by draft animals to pull the barges.  Other sections of the trail  are stone
dust, and still others are gravel or a combination that runs along the canal and
then  loops through the downtown center of a village.
At times the trail runs on a wide path set aside along highway Route 5 and 5s as
they  parallels the canal. This network of bike and walking trails connects Albany
New York to Buffalo New York,  a distance of 360 miles or so and in total
includes 520 miles of designated bike and walking trail.

Most trails are beside the Erie Canal, built in 1825, although some sections are
on a wide path along the paved  highway Route 31 on the western section, The
New York State Bicycle Route 5.
On the eastern section of the canal ,The New York State Bicycle Route 5 travels
over Highway Routes 5 and 5s.
The Off-road Canalway Trail Runs parallel to the on-road bike route in places.
The trail builders have a goal of over 400 miles of off-road bicycle trail within a
few years.
