Driving in France, Speed Limit
Speed Limits
Speed limits in Europe are in Kilometers per hour and are clearly marked along most roads in France, often
with flashing lights.
Topes, berms,
speed bumps are not used to slow traffic on the highway but do exist on the back roads of
France but in limited numbers and they are not large. They are  marked by a tent like symbol that will at first fool
the US driver looking for a campsite.
Lights will slow traffic through the villages.
Speed Limit
here is 130
Kilometers per

clear
day
110 in the
rain
.   This is
80.77 mph
when clear,
68.35 in the rain
Speed Limit Marked with  International Traffic Symbols
speed limits through small
villages will be marked and
possibly lit with
flashing signs.
Speed limits on the
highway will be marked
by a
red circle on a
white board;
reduced
speed in the rain and on
exiting.
A quick rule of thumb to estimate
the conversion from Kilometers per
hour to miles per hour.:
Divide the total by 3 and add two
of the thirds.   Example 100 kph
divided by thirds is 33 KPH. Add
two and you get 66 Miles Per Hour
While not accurate for large
numbers, this quick in your head
figuring comes out to 66 Mph close
enough to the actual 62 MPH to be
within the

Do You need an International Driving Permit to Drive in Europe.
In France you do not need an International Permit.  In Italy you can rent a car and do not need to show an
International Permit, only your drivers license from your home country and perhaps your passport.
Italian law
requires that you carry an IDP as does Spain, Portugal, Greece, and several of the former Soviet Union
countries. The International driver's permit is issued by the American Automobile Association AAA in the
States and the CAA in Canada. The cost is $15 and not a bad bit of insurance against running into trouble
while driving in Europe.
These signs show the exit cities and the
Exit Speed limit .  These are the red
circle on a white board.  In this case
reduce speed to 90 kph while exiting
the highway.
