Cinque Terre Hiking, Italy
Hiking the grape orchards and olive groves high above the Mediterranean Sea, you
look down on five tiny villages tucked into the rocks between the beach and the
steep hills.

Cinque Terre describes five fishing villages that have resisted progress for a
thousand years and still live by simple grape growing, fishing, and the harvesting of
olives.

While hiking above the villages on the steep hills, you see the Mediterranean Sea
below each town from the necklace of trails that connects the olive groves and
vineyards.

There is not much to do in Cinque Terre but hike the trails during the day and in the
evening, dine on pesto and olives, and fish from the daily harvest while drinking the
local white wine and watching  Mediterranean sunsets over the Sea.
The villages date back to
the twelfth century.

From Riomaggiore
heading north, the next
village,  Manarola is only a
half hour walk on the
walking trail, Via del Amore.

Shuttle boats connect the
villages. (except Corniglia)
Riomaggiore is the first Cinque Terre Village you enter when coming from La Spezia in the south.

The village has one pedestrian only street leading down to the sea. The houses of the medieval village of
Riomaggiore lean one to the other in a disarray of pastel colors intersected by small cobble ways and sheltered
paths.

Riomaggiore is a
fishing village with great color for artists and photographers, and good seafood restaurants.
The narrow stretch of path leading out of Riomaggiore along the coast towards
Manarola is called Via
del'Amore.

This hiking trail  leads to offshoot trails and isolated outcrops used by sunbathers.  There are also paths leading
to sanctuaries built to protect the fishermen from ravages of sea and crashing waves.

The hillside vineyards above the trail produce a white wine famous on the coast.
The village dates back to the end of the XII Century; its brightly colored buildings make the village unique.

The Via del Amore weaves its way north along the rocky mountainside to Manarola, the second of the antique
seaside towns as you head north along the coast.

Rio Magiorre offers ample lodging opportunities includeing hotels hostels and B&Bs.
