Rio Magiorre is a good
place to base for ample
lodging choices,
connection to the
railway, and to the
shuttle boats
Rio Magiorre is a good place to base. It is the first village when coming from the
south. Rio Magiorre has good connection to the railway which weaves in and out of
tunnels along the coast and this can offer a means to reach each village.
The shuttle boats also stop at Rio Magiorre as they go between villages. The hiking
trail Via del Amore is the first of the hiking trails that connect the villages.
Each village has its own character, Although now they are only a few minutes apart by
train and the passenger ferry that makes frequent trips during the day, these villages
were once isolated by the steep cliffs which are now terraced intensively. The network
of trails over the terraces making a great place for hikers.
The Five Lands are small fishing villages carved out of the rocky hillsides a thousand
years ago or more. In Rio Magiorre the locals still fish the Bay of Ligeria and tend
grape vines and olive trees on the terraced hills .
Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mar provide lodging
in one of the best preserved natural areas of the Mediterranean, now a natural park
and preserve. The park runs bus service between the villages
