Cassis,  Hiking The South of France, Provence,
From Marseilles
Cassis:
Once you reach Cassis you will find a coastal village located on the Cote d'
Azure, one of many beach and resort villages which include St Tropez,
Cannes and Nice.
Cassis is small and less well known than the other villages but famous for its
fjord-like inlets and noted for its hiking and cliff climbing on the steep rocky
coast.
Cassis also has a  gambling casino and in the harbor you find tour boats
that will take you out along the coast to the fjord-like  Calanques.
Hikers can go back
towards Marseilles by
leaving e the sheltered
harbor of Cassis and
head towards
Marseilles on  the GR
98.
A short day hike could
be the trail from Cassis
harbor to the Calanque
d'En Vau

Another way to hike the
cliffs is to board the tour
boat from  the harbor
and leave the boat at
one of the eight
Calanques, or fjords
along the coast.
Hikers go ashore to
explore.
The former fishing village of Cassis  is nearly
all given over to pleasure craft and tourism and
includes a gambling casino that attracts large
numbers of visitors from Marseilles.
Tour boats for under 10 Euros take passengers
from the village docks and out along the sheer
limestone cliffs into the fjords known as Calanques.
Hikers can leave the boat and spend the day in the
cliffs, catching an afternoon return boat.
Cassis Hiking in the South of France from Marseilles to Cassis
on the GR 98 include hikes along the cliff trails to the port of
Cassis.
This will be a 15 mile or more, two-day trip depending on side
trips that you make into the Calanques.
Cassis on the
Mediterranean in
Provence, the south
of France, has a
great little harbor
rimmed by waterside
restaurants where
you can board a tour
boat for  hiking  the
Calanques
Check ahead of your trip, many areas of Provence close the
woods to hiking in the Summer, July, August and early
September due to fire hazard
The boats cruise along the shore passing the eight large Calanques in order
as you travel from
Cassis to Marseilles: Port Miou, Port Pin, En Vau, L'Oule,
Devenson Creek, L'Oeil de Verre, Sugiton, and Morgiou.
Hikers coming from Marseilles can take side trails to visit these Calanques.
If you cannot make the full hike, a drive From
Marseilles on the D-559 will lead to hiking
areas near Morgiou  Calanque and will give
you a good look at a Calanques village.
You can make a short hike from the harbor of Cassis to Port Pin and Port
Miou.  Go to the right as you face the water at the port of Cassis; the trail
runs to the first two Calanques.
Morgiou Calanque is a favorite rock climbing area in the
Calanques.  The ideal climbing season is October through
April. The exception to that is when Mistral winds make
climbing difficult.
You can park in the village and hike the trails along the coast.

Check ahead of your trip; hiking can be prohibited in this
area  from July to the first week in September due to fire
hazard. June and September could be ideal months for a
visit.
Morgiou could be a good half way stop an a two-day hike.
Port Morgiou or Sormiou could provide handy way stations
for an overnight stop on a two-day hike.
A road reaches
these port villages
.  From Marseilles, take a turn near the
Luminy Campus  off of the D-559.
The hiking from Marseilles to Cassis will be done for the most part on the  GR
98 (51)Trail.  This trail is designed for walking, not technical climbing, and
could be open year round.  (Check ahead for fire closures)
You will need to pack adequate water for a two day trip.  A good map is handy
to have; there are many trails in the area.

Near Marseilles the trail starts in Callenongue.  This can be reached by bus
from Marseilles and  can be a starting point.
Buses
from Marseilles also reach  La Madrague  another good starting point
for a
hike to Cassis.
