Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-provence Vacation In The South of France
Aix-en-Provence once the home of Cezanne
and the playground of Emile Zola, is full of
history, color, and texture and claims one of the
most beautiful streets in France.
Aix en Provence will offer a great deal of sights
and sounds of Provence. Aix has house rentals
apartment and vacation rentals.
Aix en Provence will offer lots to do and see and can
be a base to visit other regions because Aix en
Provence has public transportation to other cities or
rental cars for hiking, biking and kayaking
excursions in the nearby hills.
A good place to start a tour of Aix-en-Provence is
at the tourist office just off the circle at the east end
of the Cours Mirabeau. Get Maps and other
good info that suggests many interesting walks
and trolley circuits through the city.

Aix-en-Provence are plentiful
in the city boasting the most
beautiful street in France
according to the guidebooks.
Other treasure of Aix might
be of equal worth. The street,
Cours Mirabeau, has its
beauty to be sure, mostly for
its Plane Trees (Sycamore),
its sidewalk cafés, and its
fountains, but look out! Cars
use this street, built in 1649
for horse-drawn coaches,
and if you think you are going
to prop the family against La
Fontaine D'eau Chaude (The
Hot Water Fountain built in
1734) for a group photo, be
careful of their toes or a fast
moving Citroen might roll
right over them.
The Cours Mirabeau does have its charm, however, with its 17th and 18
century hotels and villas and the restaurants that line the broad sidewalk and
make the street look like a suburban version of the Champs-Elysee.
A walk on the Cours Mirabeau or a stop for a
rest on one of the many benches can be
pleasant way to people watch in spite of the
traffic. A better bet, however, is to walk the
pedestrian only streets and "Semi
Pedestrian Only Streets" that line both sides
of The Cours Mirabeau.
Wade into the heart of Aix-en-Provence on
its winding, narrow streets and visit the 1665
Pavilion De Vendome and its gardens or
walk through the narrow opening at the
Passage Agard and visit the Deux Garcons
Café, a haunt of Cezanne and rated a top
restaurant. On other walks you will find the
plazas and fountains where Emile Zola grew
up.
You can walk to the hill from the Plaza Hotel
de Ville towards the first century edge of the
city and pass the medieval rampart ( Just a
little wall remaining) and visit the workshop
of Cezanne. On the way, visit Gothic St.
Sauveur Cathedral and its medieval chapel
and the 1650s building housing the Museum
of Tapestries. The architecture of Aix spans
two millennium.
On the south side of the Cours the
streets have a grid pattern and there
you will find the L'Eglise St. Jean
De Malte, a 12 the century Gothic
church of the Knights of Malta.
On the north side of the Cours, the
old town with its maze of narrow
streets is much larger and its older
buildings make it a great place to
walk.
Trolleys and public buses also tour
the city. Info is available at the tourist
