Aix-en-Provence Music Festival, July Classical Music
Aix-en-Provence
These venues for the Music Festival event in July  are a
short walk from the mid point of the Cours Mirabeau and its
many benches and cafés.

Between events this can be pleasant place to people
watch.   The northern section of the city  in the area of the
Cathedral of St. Sauveur is given over to mostly
pedestrian-only streets and "Semi Pedestrian-Only
Streets"

Wade into the heart of Aix-en-Provence on its winding,
narrow streets and visit the
1665 Pavilion De Vendome
and its gardens or walk through the narrow opening at the

Passage Agard
and visit the Deux Garcons Café, a
haunt of Cezanne and rated a top restaurant.

On other walks you will find the many plazas and fountains.

You can walk to the hill from the Plaza Hotel de Ville
towards the first century edge of the city and pass the
medieval rampart and roman walls( Just a little wall
remaining) and visit the workshop of Cezanne. On the way,
you will pass Gothic St. Sauveur Cathedral and its
medieval chapel and the 1650s building housing the
Museum of Tapestries, (Archbishops Palace) one of the
music Festival venues
On the south side of the Cours the
streets have a grid pattern and there
you will find the  L'Eglise St. Jean De
Malte, a 12 the century Gothic church of
the Knights of Malta.

On the north side of the Cours, the old
town with its maze of narrow streets is
much larger and its older buildings
make it a great place to walk.

Trolleys and public buses also tour the
city. Info is available at the tourist office.

Each summer in July  a music festival comes
to
Aix-en-Provence and turns many halls,
churches and hotel courtyards into concert halls
and stages where
Wagner and Mozart head
the bill of performances of
opera and classical
music
.

The event started in 1948 and has grown
steadily to become Provence's largest concert
series devoted to classical music and opera.

The main venues for performance are now the
Theatre de L'Archeveche, a theatre built at
the palace once the home of the Archbishop, a
restored 18th century theatre in the courtyard of
the
 Hotel Maynier d'Oppede,   the Theatre
Jeu de Paumes, and a new theatre, the Grand
Theatre de Provence
which opened in 2007.
You can walk to the
Theatre de
L'Archeveche
from the
Cours Mirabeau in
about ten minutes.  It is
north of the Cours
Mirabeau on Rue
Gaston de Sporta at the
Cathedral of Saint
Sauveur.
The Archbishops
Palace
is now the
Museum of Tapestries
and the
courtyard
becomes a stage for
the
July Music Festival

Hotel Maynier

is near the

The hotel , now the
Institute of French
Studies
opens its
courtyard for the music
festival.
The newest theatre venue in Aix is the modern ( 2007)  Grand Theatre de Provence, on Avenue Max
Juvenal, a five minute walk (six blocks west ) from the rotary at the west end of the Cours Mirabeau.  Parking
is available at the theatre which seats up to 1,366 and has capacity in the orchestra pit for 105 musicians.
With its curvilinear design and spacious patios, the thoroughly modern building stands as a great contrast to
the Gothic architecture of Aix-en-Provence.
