A good place to start a tour of Aix-en-Provence is
at the
tourist office just off the circle at the east
end of the Cours Mirabeau.       Get Maps and other
good info that suggests many interesting walks and
trolley circuits through the city.

Walk
deeper into the
old town and walk the
pedestrian only streets and "Semi Pedestrian
Only Streets"  that line both sides of The Cours
Mirabeau.   
Wade into the heart of Aix-en-Provence on its
winding,
narrow streets and visit the 1665
Pavilion De Vendome
and its gardens or
walk through the narrow opening at the
Passage
Agard
and visit the Deux Garcons Café, a
haunt of
Cezanne and rated a top restaurant.
On other walks you will find the plazas and
fountains where Emile Zola grew up.    
You can walk to the hill from the
Plaza Hotel de
Ville
towards the first century edge of the city
and pass the medieval rampart ( Just a little wall
remaining) and visit the
workshop of
Cezanne
. On the way, visit Gothic St. Sauveur
Cathedra
l and its medieval chapel and the
1650s building housing the Museum of
Tapestries. The architecture of Aix spans two
millennium.
On the south side of the Cours the streets
have a grid pattern and there you will find the  
L'Eglise St. Jean De Malte, a 12 the century
Gothic church of the
Knights of Malta.

On the north side of the Cours, the old town
with its maze of narrow streets is much larger
and its older buildings make it a great place
to walk.

Trolleys and public buses also tour the
